Despite limited publicity the last few years have offered the buyer great advancements in oil independent electric vehicles (EV’s).  With ranges now exceeding 250 miles on a charge with some models it is possible to now have a second vehicle that uses no gas at all.  Also many companies have developed solar charges that fix to a garage roof to make the entire process environmentally and wallet friendly.  I have chosen 3 EV’s with unique designs in one way or another, and all cost around 1 cent or less per mile to operate.

1. Phoenix SUV. 

Top Speed / Range: 95mph / 250miles

Engine: 148hp, 0-60 in <10sec

Battery: Recyclable lithium ion battery, dead to charge in 5-6 hrs, optional off board 10 min charger, battery life is 12 years or around 250k miles

Price: $45K

Availability:  Expected to hit the market in 2010. Taking reservations

2. Tesla Roadster. 

Top speed / Range: 135mph / 200 miles

Engine: 248 HP, 0-60 in 3.7 sec

Battery: Recyclable lithium ion battery, dead to charge 3.5 hrs

Price: 109K

Availability: 1 year waiting list

3. Zero S Motorcycle    

Top speed / range: 70mph / 60 miles

Battery:  Recyclable lithium ion battery, dead to charge about 2 hrs.

Price: 9,700 plus 300 for shipping,

Availability:  Taking orders now to ship in May of 2009
